The whole project started after I returned to work after the summer 2020 (I teach at a college) and found all the corridors had been divided up into a one-way system, with a load of stickers of white arrows in blue circles. I started to photograph them, looking at composition, pattern and texture of the surrounding floor, putting them together into a gridded series, which sort of echoed the control and structure imposed on the people walking the corridors.
I then started to notice lots of different signs on the pavements, and on the floors and windows outside and inside of shops. I started to photograph them, limiting myself to just the round signs, making the sign the centre of the square frame to make the overall look of the final typology consistent.
I aimed to get 50 images, but kind of got carried away and ended up collecting a lot more. below are the first 100 signs, when I reached 150, I produced a poster and set of photobooks. The collection is now reaching 250.
Now as we've pretty much returned to some normality, and the stickers have been removed, or are starting to fade and wear away, these images remain as a reminder, a sign, of the pandemic.
